‘We’re a locomotive, we don’t stop.’

Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his brother Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) are escaping a bank robbery gone wrong in an ambulance.

They have two hostages, an EMT (Eiza González) and a shot cop needing emergency surgery.

It’s a Michael Bay action movie.

And I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way.

But some of the storyline, like the emergency surgery conducted by Cam the EMT in the back of the ambulance with instruction via Face Chat from surgeons taking a break from playing golf, pushed the storyline to the ridiculous making the cast have to work really hard to make the film believable enough to be watchable.

Yes, it’s a classic action film, with some awkward humour that rarely hit the mark, and yet being a classic action the light-hearted crazy from bad-brother Danny complimented the high-speed chases as the two brother are chased across LA by choppers and souped-up cop cars all to a soundtrack that just kept revving faster and faster.

It’s a quintessential LA setting with graffiti, and rubbish-strewn streets; the city lights and mesmerising, layered highways.  Ambulance is about two brothers growing up in LA, one who follows in his father’s footsteps, a well-known robber with a reputation of being psychotic, the other brother choosing a different life, to become a marine.

So there’s a back-story to the brothers’ relationship that keeps up the drama; Will doing right but right doesn’t pay for his wife’s desperately needed surgery.  So when he asks his wayward brother for money, it’s a matter of Will having to help him pull off a $32 million bank heist to get it.

And Danny can be very convincing.

Then there’s the EMT Cam – she can keep anyone alive for 20 minutes, but no one wants to be her partner.

One of the highlights of the film is Cam mystified seeing the two brothers singing the 80s classic, Sailing, while trying to relax mid-escape.

There’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour mixed with flashbacks to childhood montages with emotive music that kinda worked.  But what really worked in this film was the awe-inspiring camerawork that had the action spinning around to fly straight up into the air.

Really, the car chases and explosions are next level.

So medical procedures, high speed car chases and strange humour that had me scratching my head, like – ‘what did you do to my legs?!’ asks one robber after his legs are twisted the wrong way after being run over.

But overall, Ambulance is worth a watch just for those high-speed action shots.

‘What do you want?’ asks Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o) of her shadow.

‘What do we want?!’ her reflection, Red replies.

Us is a film of many layers, the use of reflection, of Adelaide talking to herself reflected in a glass window; shadows tethered to bodies, while waving across the sand: ‘Once upon a time, a girl was born with a shadow…’ introduce the folklore of the doppelgänger to create the fear of self as an everyday American family meet their Other selves, while vacationing at their summer beach house in Santa Cruz.

It’s a strange setting for a horror-thriller – going to the beach as a family of husband, Gabe (Winston Duke), wife, Adelaide, daughter, Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and son, Jason (Evan Alex); meeting friends, hanging out on lounges, drinking, well husband and wife, the Tylers’ (Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker) drinking while their two teenage daughters Becca and Lindsey (Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon) play in the sand.

And that odd play of normality, just off kilter, sets the tone of the film.

Us is different to what I expected.

I thought I was walking into creeps and super-scary, but for me, I found the film thought-provoking, and sure, suspenseful, lightened by this incredibly dark satire.

Director, writer and producer Jordan Peele states, “Horror and comedy are both great ways of exposing how we feel about things…  The comedy that emerges from a tense moment or scene in a horror film is necessary for cleaning the emotional palate, to release the tension.  It gives your audience an opportunity to emotionally catch up and get prepared for the next run of terror.”

I wholeheartedly agree there’s a close link between horror and humour.  There’s a fine line between the two, tapping into an old part of our brain that can react with fear or laughter, if the moment misses the mark – I’m not afraid of the dark, ha-ha.  To tap into this reaction and include a character like husband Gabe bases the film in normality, because that’s the way people behave: tissue up a bloody nostril, and statement, ‘almost looks like some kind of fucked-up art instalment,’ included.

Winston Duke really nailed the character, Gabe and I appreciated this layer of bizarre humour to lighten the strange – as Jorden states above, to, ‘clean the palate’.

Jordan has managed to tie the normality of the family priority: money, cars, competition in the face of brut survival – like reacting to threat with violence being the most normal thing in today’s world.   Never forgetting how cool it is to own a boat.

The story hangs on this story of a family, of a mother still traumatised by an incident in her past, back in 1986 when she gets lost as a little girl in a Fun Park, where she meets her Other.  And vacationing back in the place of that first incident creates a domino effect of coincidence, until, her family meets…  Hers.

But there can only be one self.  That’s where the horror comes in, with some good blood and guts – yet the film’s not really about the doppelgänger, it’s more about what the doppelgänger represents: evil, the shadow, the end of times:

There thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

So, did I like the movie?

Honestly, Us wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be.

Yet, the careful handling of timing and layering of complicated ideas and story made a unique viewing experience.  And I kept giggling – strangely, the humour was what affected me the most – while also thinking about the comment made about the ones we’ve abandoned far below the tunnels of ourselves.

Aquaman

Aquaman was always going to be a difficult adaptation – the film about ‘fish boy[‘s].  No, it’s fish men!’; the setting underwater.

But with James Wan as director and one of the writers, I went into the film somewhat reassured.

Then the film opened with Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Atlantean royalty meeting a surface dweller, and I was thrown because I just couldn’t believe I was seeing an Atlantis queen falling in love, the contrast a little too much.

Perhaps it was seeing Nicole Kidman as an action figure?!

And there were times when I really couldn’t decide whether to laugh with the film or at it – the guitar riff to highlight a joke not helping.

Yet, as the film progressed and Jason Momoa as Aquaman opened up to give us a down-to-earth (well, half-surface dweller, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry) hero, I became more absorbed.

Forbidden love between a queen of the sea and a man from the surface bears a forbidden son, a half-breed.  Aquaman.

Yet even as a half-breed, Aquaman has the right to claim the throne of Atlantis instead of his younger brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) who plots to become the Ocean Master; to bring together all seven kingdoms of the underwater world: Atlantis, Brine, Fisherman, Xebel, Trench, Deserter and the Lost.  Together they can destroy those on the surface.

Afterall, aren’t the surface-dwellers creating pollution and trashing the sea into poison for those who inhabit its waters?

Those who want peace with the surface dwellers not war, rise to the surface to seek Aquaman to fight for the throne to then save those above and below, with love-interest Mera (Amber Heard) abandoning Atlantis, just like his mother.  All leading to the meeting of the two brothers on opposing sides of an inevitable battle.

The writers have created enough twists and turns to keep the film interesting and it has to be noted the film has a different tone to the other DC, Justice League films.

Aquaman is more a technologically based world with an 80s-esq tone including synth soundtrack and fluorescent lit underwater worlds that become more spectacular as the film progresses.

Let me state again, it gets better!

There’s the expected cheese, because, yeah, this is Aquaman: Son of the land, king of the sea.

But Wan has offset this with humour and his own unique style.

Jason Momoa’s performance as Aquaman certainly helped.

So after an ordinary beginning, Aquaman ramps up to a deliver a visually stunning entertainer that was able to take a laugh at itself with a story that comes full circle.
